Nolen Zeno Qualls
In Loving Memory
July 24, 1937 - March 22, 2023
Nolen Zeno Qualls was born in Lincoln County on July 24, 1937, to the late Samuel and Beatrice Qualls. He was the fifth of eight children.
Nolen graduated from Lillie Mae Bryant High School in Meadville, MS, in 1955, and earned his Bachelor's degree in science education from Jackson State College in 1959. He furthered his education at Southern Illinois University and Tuskegee Institute, earning a Master's degree in 1964. During this time, Nolen taught high school science classes in Franklin County, and eventually moved to Jackson, MS, where he joined the Boy Scouts of American in 1965.
While in Jackson, Nolen met Bobbie Jean Mitchell of West Point, MS. They married in December 1966, and their union produced 2 children, Derrick and Tanya.
Nolen was well-known in the Jackson-Hinds County area as a communitiy organizer, and was active in many civic and social groups for many years. He helped several local entrepreneurs with various business ventures, and eventually started Sam's Landscaping service.
Later in life, Nolen developed a close relationship with his heavenly father, and was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses on June 26, 2007. He was an active member of the Capitol Hill congregation in Jackson, MS, until his health problems intervened.
After a long battle with hypertension, stroke, and Parkinson's disease, Nolen passed away on Wednesday March 23, 2023.
